Project Intern: Wheatbelt Provision of Community Sport

Role Title: Project Intern: Wheatbelt Provision of Community Sport

Organisation: Department of Local Government Sports and Cultural Industries

Internship Period: Winter (June - July)

Location: Leederville / Wheatbelt

Role Description

The intern will be responsible for:
• Assisting with the implementation of the Wheatbelt Provision of Community Sport Project • Providing background research and project administration to assist the Winter Sports Working Group The intern will be required to attend 2-3 meetings in the Wheatbelt (support for travel available). The Wheatbelt Provision of Community Sport was initially commissioned in 2012. Objectives included: identifying key factors affecting the development of sport, identifying existing and potential barriers, identifying guiding principles to maximise current and future participation. What became apparent is that when addressing community sport- flexibility is critical. The burden on volunteers to deliver community sport post COVID is under scrutiny. Can sport be delivered more efficiently? The Wheatbelt Provision of Community Sport is a joint project between the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) , Western Australian Football Commission, WA Country Football League, Netball WA and Hockey WA to continue the investigation into Winter Sports competitions and identified Associations. From the data collected and research completed so far - it is really clear that communities want to play sport that is not a heavy burden on volunteers - and they want to experience this as a family. Footy, hockey and netball have identified this opportunity to work together to strengthen sport in the region; as a whole of Winter Sport approach and by default a whole of community approach. The purpose of this position is to support the project facilitator with the implementation of the project.
