Kham contributes finance skills to help Denmark Community Resource Centre serve community

29 July, 2025

Kham Stiely, a UWA Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance and Management, took the opportunity to hit the road for an internship with the Denmark Community Resource Centre over the winter uni break.

“I wanted to do something meaningful while getting real-world experience, so I applied for the McCusker Centre for Citizenship’s internship program, which stood out as an opportunity to learn while contributing to the community,” Kham said.

With his willingness to travel, the McCusker Centre team offered Kham the Policy and Procedures Intern role in Denmark, and he spent 100 hours over June and July helping create a financial strategy to support the Denmark Community Resource Centre’s (the Centre) long-term sustainability.

“Interning with the Centre showed me how much effort and care goes into providing valuable supports for regional communities. A real highlight was getting to see my work actually make a difference, I really enjoyed being trusted with meaningful tasks and working closely with the team,” he said.

Kham helped to develop funding and engagement approaches for the financial strategy, wrote policy, and developed staff manuals, making an impression through his efforts:

“Kham quickly became a valued member of our team. He brought fresh ideas, initiative, and a thoughtful approach to every task,” said Petra Thompson, Denmark Community Resource Centre Manager.

“His work on our financial strategy and internal processes has already made a difference, and we are so grateful for the skills, energy and professionalism he contributed during his time with us.”

The internship was a rich experience for Kham, providing him with confidence, inspiration and experience, as well as opportunities to enjoy a taste of life in the Great Southern.

“I would absolutely recommend the McCusker Centre program to other students, it’s a great way to build skills, meet passionate people, and work on projects that have an impact – I absolutely loved the experience.

“I was able to stay in a beautiful room at the Denmark Arts Centre, and went down to the beach and for nature walks after work.

“I now have a better appreciation for behind-the-scenes work that keeps community services going, and I gained experience in planning, communication, and problem-solving — all skills that are useful in any workplace. I hope that by helping improve internal processes and contributing to a financial strategy, I have left the Centre able to run more smoothly and continue offering valuable support to the Denmark community.”
