Role Title: Project Intern: Hooded Plover and Fire Water Point Camera Survey Analysis

Fire Water Points are artificially created dams, where fire trucks can replenish their water. Logs have been pushed into a number of these fire dams to improve access for birds and camera traps installed to measure the impact of the logs on bird drinking activity.
In a separate project, drone surveys are currently underway in Yalgorup National Park, initially focussing on Lake Preston or Martins Tank Lake, to see if Hooded Plovers can be identified using the drone images, and whether repeat surveys could provide a metric of population change through time.
The student will assist DBCA Staff with processing images from the drone surveys (Hooded Plovers) and camera trap images (Fire Water Points). Also, investigate use of AI to identify images, collate data into an Excel database and produce a summary report.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) brings together the Parks and Wildlife Service, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Zoological Parks Authority (Perth Zoo), Rottnest Island Authority, Conservation and Parks Commission, Swan River Trust (Swan Canning Riverpark) and Biodiversity and Conservation Science.
