Marine Invertebrate Zoology Curation Project Intern - Sea Pens

Role Title: Marine Invertebrate Zoology Curation Project Intern - Sea Pens

Organisation: WA Museum

Internship Period: Summer (November - December)

Location: Welshpool

Role Description

The Western Australian Museum is looking for passionate biologists to help us rehouse, register and arrange alcohol-preserved sea pens (Phylum: Cnidaria, Superfamily: Pennatuloidea). Newly registered specimens will contribute to the WA Museum Legacy Collection Project outcomes. The data produced by this project will be uploaded to ALA where it will be discoverable to researchers and other interested parties around the globe.
The project will involve interpreting specimen labels and entering data into an excel spreadsheet following a specified format. Taxonomic identifications will be updated using WoRMS where applicable. Specimens will need to be transferred into appropriate glassware when required. New data labels will printed and added to specimen jars before being returned to our wet collection where specimens are arranged by taxonomy. If the Pennatuloidea are completed within the timeframe of this project then there is capacity to continue with similar work with the zoanthid collection (Phylum: Cnidaria, Order: Zoantharia).
