Project Intern: Using iNaturalist as a tool for environmental science education

Role Title: Project Intern: Using iNaturalist as a tool for environmental science education

Organisation: UWA School of Agriculture and Environment

Internship Period: Semester 2 (July – October)

Location: Nedlands (UWA campus)

Role Description

The intern will undertake a project focussed on investigating the use of iNaturalist as an educational tool for UWA students via a BioBlitz. iNaturalist is a citizen science app used to collect data on biodiversity, and aid in identifying species. A BioBlitz is a time-bounded activity to gather as much information about species present in a particular geographic area - see https://citizenscience.org.au/the-australian-bioblitz-hub/ for more information.
The project will involve developing a framework for a BioBlitz using iNaturalist at UWA-managed properties, in the first instance for environmental science students. The intern will need to plan and develop an evaluation framework for students participating in a BioBlitz to assess improvements in learning, knowledge and awareness among participants. The intern will need to draw from existing Bioblitz platforms to create supporting materials, sign-up sheets and other event-related materials including a call for volunteers to participate in the BioBlitz. If there is sufficient time available during the internship, the intern may help co-ordinate a trial BioBlitz event with a small number of volunteers, and document the event.
