Role Title: Affordable Housing Models for Young People Intern

Imagined Futures is a placed-based collective impact initiative which bring together government and community organisations to address complex social issues the South West Metropolitan region of Perth.
This project would be focused on research to explore affordable housing options for young people, with a focus on what models are working internationally and what could be adapted for Western Australia.
There are limited affordable housing options for young people in Western Australia. Many young people are being priced out of the private rental market, often due to low incomes, limited rental history, and the lack of suitable entry-level rental options. Young people may also need practical support to maintain a tenancy, including help with employment, education, life skills, budgeting, and financial stability.
Key Research Questions
• What affordable housing options currently exist for young people in WA and Australia?
• What barriers do young people face when trying to access or maintain housing?
• What youth housing models are working well internationally?
• What types of support help young people sustain a tenancy?
• Which models or ideas could be adapted to suit the local WA context?
This research aligns with Imagined Futures work through Where is the door? which connects young people to local supports earlier, addressing barriers such as cost, eligibility, understanding options and where to start looking for help.
The Imagined Futures partnership consists of members who live or work in the local government areas of Cockburn, Fremantle and Melville. Members come from a variety of sectors, including government and non-government human services, business and philanthropy, as well as the community. Our mission is to mobilise the collective resources of not-for-profit organisations, local, state and commonwealth government agencies, business and community members to provide all individuals and families in the South West Metropolitan region with the opportunity to enjoy quality of life.
