Role Title: Exmouth Marine Invertebrate Collections Intern 1

Natural history collections are critical scientific resources underpinning research in taxonomy, ecology and conservation. However, within the Aquatic Zoology collections at WA Museum, a considerable proportion of collected specimens remain unregistered, therefore this data is currently invisible to researchers, managers, and decision-makers. The Aquatic Zoology team at WA Museum are working on an exciting project aimed at assessing the marine biodiversity of the Exmouth Gulf region. This project involves auditing our wet and dry store collections and registering specimens currently stored in our facilities.
The main tasks the intern will participate in include handling dried and ethanol-preserved specimens, reading specimen labels, entering registration information from labels into Excel spreadsheets, and assisting with collection maintenance as required. The intern will work closely with the project officer for this project, who will provide further guidance and training.
This work will contribute to the WA Museum’s Exmouth Gulf Marine Biodiversity project, which seeks to establish a comprehensive understanding of marine biodiversity in Exmouth Gulf to support future research, conservation and management planning in the region.
