Didymo risk to WA Research Intern

Role Title: Didymo risk to WA Research Intern

Organisation: Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development

Internship Period: Winter (June - July)

Location: 39 Northside Drive, Hillarys

Role Description

Didymo (Didymosphenia geminate), also known as rock snot, a freshwater diatom that is not native and is considered to be highly invasive. It is not currently known to be present in Australia (https://www.agriculture.gov.au/about/news/pest-profile-didymo) It has however become established in parts of New Zealand.
The Aquatic Pests Biosecurity team is interested in understanding the level of risk posed by Didymo to WA currently, and potentially any additional mitigations that WA can put in place should that risk be determined to be unacceptable (greater than low risk). Suitable for third year undergraduates or post-graduate students undertaking studies in the fields of Biosecurity, Freshwater ecology, or environmental or marine sciences, you will conduct a species-specific risk assessment, reviewing literature, to compile a report to address the risk of Didymo to WA.
