Ari Begzragchaa, studying a Master of Environmental Science at UWA, has contributed to sustainability practices on campus through her McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship.
In the Sustainability Reporting Intern role with UWA Campus Management, Ari helped with data entry and analysis, looking at United Nations (UN) initiatives like the Communication on Progress Questionnaire for the UN Global Compact, and assisted with practical changes to make UWA more sustainable.
“A significant highlight of my internship was implementing an energy-saving initiative at the Barry J. Marshal library,” Ari said.
“I worked with my supervisor and UWA IT to ensure more than 250 library computers would set to sleep mode after working hours - this simple step saves daily energy and will help to reduced CO2 emissions, aligning with the university's sustainability goals,” she said.
“My internship experience underscored the significant impact of small, detail-oriented initiatives within an organisation that lead to tangible positive changes. I believe my work on energy-saving measures not only contributes to the university's sustainability goals but also serves as a learning opportunity for students and staff, highlighting the importance of sustainability in daily practices.”
Geraldine Tan, Ari’s internship supervisor and Manager, Sustainability (Environments & Governance) with UWA Campus Management, said that Ari had been an enthusiastic member of the team with a clear focus on how energy was used on campus.
“I was impressed with Ari’s proactive approach to sustainability, it showed real care for the campus and a desire to make a difference,” Dr Tan said.
“I have always enjoyed working with McCusker Centre interns and Ari is no exception.”
Ari said that, aside from the opportunity to have an impact on UWA’s environmental sustainability, the internship gave her a wealth of personal and professional experience.
“The internship provided invaluable experience in sustainability management, serving as a practical application of my academic learning. It allowed me to develop and utilise my abilities and capacities effectively, I made friends as well as gaining career advice from my supervisor, and the workshops and seminars encouraged me to make the most of the practical opportunities to make change.
“I highly recommend undertaking a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship, particularly to international students, as they offer an excellent environment to showcase skills, learn, and network, and the Centre’s team provide equal opportunity for all students in the program to make the most of the experience.”
