Kunal Chawla took on a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship during his Master of Business Analytics degree at UWA, bringing his past work experience as well as his newly gained skills to the table to support Gosnells Community Legal Centre.
“I have years of corporate marketing experience from India, and I decided to apply for a McCusker Centre internship to gain experience in an Australian setting with a not-for-profit or government organisation,” Kunal said.
Coming on board to help with the legal centre’s rebrand, Kunal went above and beyond expectations, designing a new website that staff said will make it much easier for clients to access their services.
“Working at Gosnells CLC, I learned about how Community Legal Centres’ services ultimately contribute to greater social justice and wellbeing in the community by helping resolve tenancy issues, family disputes and supporting with financial strains.
“Helping with the rebrand and new website gave me an opportunity to feel like my work could benefit the community, who can now connect with the organisation through an accessible website, where they can find useful resources or book an appointment,” Kunal said.
Sarah Patterson, CEO at Gosnells CLC, said that along with knowledge of marketing and online media, Kunal’s thorough consultation with staff and his generosity and motivation to do more than expected had made a big difference.
“Gosnells CLC has always been a go-to for the community, but we are limited in what we can achieve with scarce resourcing – marketing is often a luxury we do not have.
“As we were about to embark on a full rename and rebrand of our organisation, Kunal came in, assessed our needs and provided a recommendation: our website needed rebuilding. Kunal was able to design a brand-new website with everything on our wish list within the time he interned with us,” she said.
“His work will make it much easier for clients to get the help they need, and for us to direct our resources to those who are in the most immediate need of support.”
Kunal said that the internship had been the highlight of his study experience at UWA, allowing him to give back to the community while building towards his professional goals as a marketing and brand specialist.
“I will certainly recommend the McCusker Centre’s internship program to other students – applying for one program that can connect you to one of many not-for-profit or government host organisations is a great platform.”
