Sajjad uses data to help DFES keep emergency vehicles ready to go

10 March, 2025

Sajjad Raza, studying Mechanical Engineering, interned with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) through the McCusker Centre for Citizenship’s program, using data to help keep WA’s emergency response vehicles ready for action.

“I worked with data from repairs on the DFES fleet to find patterns in component failures and determine the best period for replacements. By gathering and analysing data I could explore opportunities for improving the fleet’s efficiency and reliability, and I put together a report on my findings with suggestions to help the team plan maintenance and replacements more effectively,” Sajjad said.

Looking for an opportunity to put his skills to use in a real-world setting that had a positive impact, Sajjad said the internship had been the perfect way to combine what he’d learnt as an engineering student with a project that benefited the community.

“The chance to contribute to welfare and emergency relief efforts was a great experience, I really enjoyed working on systems that help people when they need it most.

“I loved uncovering insights about how fire trucks and fleet vehicles are managed across Western Australia - it was fascinating to see the complexity of the system through data. It highlighted how crucial it is to keep the fleet running smoothly, especially with the growing threat of bushfires,” Sajjad said.

Luke Mitchinson is Superintendent Plant and Equipment Services with DFES and was Sajjad’s internship supervisor.

“Sajjad’s contributions, particularly in analysing fleet assets and creating practical resources, like a fleet analysis pivot table and guide on how to use it, will be invaluable to the team. Sajjad’s made a great impact, and we’re grateful for the skills and insights he’s brought to DFES,” Mr Mitchinson said.

Sajjad said the internship had provided “incredibly valuable” experiences for this professional development as a future mechanical engineer.

“I gained a real understanding workplace dynamics, learning to navigate a professional environment and communicating effectively with colleagues. I also improved my skills managing large datasets. I’d definitely recommend a McCusker Centre internship to other students, it’s a great chance to gain real-world experience while working on a meaningful project with a positive impact on the community.”
