Sydney Stokes is a Bachelor of Business student at UWA, majoring in Business Management and Marketing.
Having already completed UWA’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit and looking to gain more practical experience as part of her degree, Sydney applied for an internship through the McCusker Centre for Citizenship. She was matched with the Marketing Intern role with women’s health and wellbeing not-for-profit, Luma.
Assisting with social media content, graphic design, research and writing for Luma’s blog, video production, and editing for the annual report, Sydney was also able to contribute to the organisation’s HER Board project.
“I was very lucky to be with Luma through the final stages of the creation and brand handover for the HER Board project, which is a sponsorship program to help women experiencing domestic violence leave those situations,” Sydney said.
“One of the highlights of this experience was the opportunity to work with such an incredible group of women, who are so passionate about what they do. The internship increased my awareness of the many physical and mental wellbeing services run by women, for women around Perth, many that are provided at low or no cost. The work I did during my internship will help get information on the healthcare services Luma provides to women around Perth.”
Sydney worked alongside Sarah Allen, Brand and Marketing Officer at Luma.
“Sydney slotted in so well at Luma. She came with a flexible willingness to try it all and learn it all,” Sarah said.
“Luma is a big organisation with many services for women and families, there’s a lot to learn in the first few weeks. Sydney quickly understood Luma’s voice and audience, creating meaningful and high-quality content for social media, website, our blog, and annual report. Her creative ideas also helped to amplify our campaigns. She’s destined for great things!’’
Sydney recommended the McCusker Centre internship program for other students looking to add a practical element to their study.
“This experience let me explore more of my creative side and my copywriting skills, and working with Luma helped me further develop my ability to build consistent brand and voice in the context of the space they work in. The internship made aware that my career path in marketing can make an impact in wider community-based work through the ability to relay, create and provide essential information and resources to the public.”
