Medical Device Developer Intern - preeclampsia screening

Role Title: Medical Device Developer Intern - preeclampsia screening

Organisation: North Metropolitan Health Service

Internship Period: Winter (June - July)

Location: Subiaco

Role Description

Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy and a common contributor to early birth. Screening for preeclampsia in early pregnancy allows us to identify those at increased risk and initiate a simple treatment which substantially reduces that risk.
Early pregnancy preeclampsia screening includes assessment of blood pressure according to a strict protocol. This is to ensure reliability in the results, but the strict protocol is time consuming and potentially limits the effective rollout of the screening program. We aim to develop an automated device which will make blood pressure measurement easier and reduce this as a carrier to screening implementation. The Intern will provide skills in electronics and coding in order to modify an existing blood pressure device to provide blood pressure assessment according to a defined protocol. The supervisor is a clinician within expertise in pregnancy screening but limited experience in electronics. The aim, if a device can be successfully developed will be to trial this in the clinical environment, with the potential for academic publications and industry partnership for further product development.
