Role Title: Urban Road Safety Research Intern
Organisation: Western Australian Centre for Road safety Research
Internship Period: Summer (November - December)
Location: Crawley
The intern will engage in selecting project location and treatment types for the low-cost Urban Road Safety Program using randomised control trail methodology.
WA and all other Australian jurisdictions have set targets to "Achieve 0" deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2050 and a 50-70% reduction by 2030. These targets are ambitious. Speed management is a central component to achieve these goals. Unfortunately, evidence surrounding interventions is low-quality, especially for various "low-cost" interventions. Achieving these goals requires a fundamental re-thinking of how we elicit evidence in favour of different programs and treatments. Main Roads has a series of low-cost programs targeting urban intersections which potentially provides an opportunity to conduct high-quality prospective randomised controlled trials of safety interventions. This project will lay the groundwork for such a trial in Perth by aiding in formulating a set of protocols and best practices to inform such a unique trial.
The Western Australian Centre for Road Safety Research (WACRSR) was established to conduct research into new and innovative approaches to road safety in Western Australia. Our remit is ‘Working together Towards Zero’. WACRSR research spans all pillars of the safe system and adopts a systems approach to work across all Government departments, Industry and community sectors. With WA Australia’s largest state in size, a particular specialty is ensuring advances in road safety reach our regions and remote communities, not only our capital cities and built-up areas.
