Role Title: Project Intern, Creating a Perth and Peel Urban Forest Spatial Mapping Layer
Organisation: WA Local Government Association (WALGA)
Internship Period: Summer (November - December)
Location: West Leederville
WALGA requires information on Local Government tree assets to inform our urban forest advocacy, policy development, assist biosecurity response to plant pests, and measure improvements resulting from funding investment. This project will collate data on tree assets and investigate the potential to establish an urban forest spatial mapping layer that can be updated annually. The intern will meet with representatives from DPLH, WALIS, Landgate and WALGA to determine the required tree attributes or fields, and the ability to create and host a new urban forest spatial data layer. The intern will firstly undertake a survey of the 33 Local Governments in the Perth and Peel regions to collect information e.g. the total number of street and park tree assets, the average number of new trees planted per annum, whether tree management software is used, the attributes collected (species, age, location), and LG support for annual provision of data to WALGA. The intern will be required to analyse the survey results, develop a GIS template for LGs to populate annually, write a report on their findings and present to the Local Government Urban Forest Working Group.
The WA Local Government Association (WALGA) is working for Local Government in Western Australia. As the peak industry body, WALGA advocates on behalf of WA's 139 Local Governments and negotiates service agreements for the sector. WALGA is not a government department or agency.
