Role Title: Ngooninup Project Intern: Mt Eliza cultural and historical use research
Organisation: Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions
Internship Period: Summer (November - December)
Location: Kings Park
Detections of Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) in the Mount Bay Road area at the base of the Mt Eliza Escarpment in Kings Park has brought about the Ngooninup (Mt Eliza Scarp Stability) Project. The project encompasses associated tree removals, scarp stability, environmental restoration, and drainage improvement works along with the proposed master planning of the Mounts Bay Garden precinct.
The project intern's role will be to undertake in-depth research and collation of records covering cultural history, development, and use of the Mt Elza escarpment both pre and post settlement. Research sources will include BGPA records, State records and local historical society records. The expected outcome of the research will be an indexed, digitised and collated set of records that will be utilised to inform planning and design considerations and to support future planning for the escarpment.
The project intern will work within the Planning and Design Unit of the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, located in Kings Park and Botanic Garden. The intern will be supervised by Program Manager (Bel Foster), working closely with other members of the project team as well as other BGPA staff and external stakeholders as required. Offsite research at the Battye Library will also be required.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) brings together the Parks and Wildlife Service, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Zoological Parks Authority (Perth Zoo), Rottnest Island Authority, Conservation and Parks Commission, Swan River Trust (Swan Canning Riverpark) and Biodiversity and Conservation Science.
