Heritage Support Intern

Role Title: Heritage Support Intern

Organisation: Department of Planning Lands & Heritage

Internship Period: Winter (June - July)

Location: Perth CBD

Role Description

In 2018 the Thematic History of WA was completed for the Heritage Council by Historian Clare Menck. With its completion, and a maturing of our view of cultural heritage significance, some consideration of how best to achieve a more effective and representative Register of Western Australia’s heritage places seems timely. A full review of the State Register of Heritage Places and places marked for assessment is in progress. The review is investigating gaps in the State Register and the best means by which to address them. Some of the gaps identified to date are stories relating to Aboriginal people, women, non-British migrants and workers & working. The next stage of the review will include analysis of the results and a series of agenda items being prepared for the Heritage Council so it can consider whether some places may not meet the threshold for the State Register, and which places, if updated or progressed, will enrich the Register making it more representative.
It is proposed that the intern will assist with the analysis and compilation of the items for the Heritage Council. The role would be suited to a student studying a heritage related degree such as History, Archaeology, Architecture, or Cultural Heritage Management. Good writing and analysis skills will be valuable, as will an interest in and passion for Western Australian history and heritage.
