Research Intern: Undertaking audit to Measure the burden of FDV in the Royal Perth Bentley Group Emergency Department

Role Title: Research Intern: Undertaking audit to Measure the burden of FDV in the Royal Perth Bentley Group Emergency Department

Organisation: Royal Perth Bentley Group

Internship Period: Semester 1 (February - May)

Location: Perth, Perth, WA

Role Description

This project aims to measure the prevalence of family and domestic violence (FDV) in Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) Emergency Department (ED) through a retrospective analysis of the patient’s digital medical records and conduct a cross-sectional description of the data to identify features of the study sample, correlations with determinants of health and gauge the burden of FDV in the ED. For this study, FDV is defined as a pattern of abuse, characterised by coercive and controlling behaviours intended to coerce, control and create fear within an intimate or familial relationship.
In 2024, a retrospective review of digital records from the Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) and Allied Health System (AHS) was conducted. Data was collected using the established coding system. Limitations related to inconsistent coding of presentations on EDIS and under-recording of FDV Indicator for Interventions (IFI’s) on AHS may have affected the findings and recommendations were made to replicate this study using enhanced data collection for a more accurate representation of the FDV burden and presentation characteristics. Findings will be used to inform education initiatives, such as targeted training and the development of quick reference guides. This role will help conducting the audit, collating data, writing reports and will support the organisation of education initiatives.
