Role Title: Herpetology Intern 2, Pilbara Biological Survey
Organisation: WA Museum
Internship Period: Summer (November - December)
Location: Welshpool
From 2002-2007 the Western Australian Museum in collaboration with DEC (now DBCA) conducted first comprehensive biodiversity survey of the Pilbara. 304 Terrestrial Zoology sites were surveyed with a mixture of trap types, including invertebrate wet pit traps. Vertebrate bycatch (reptiles and amphibians) from these pits has been recovered from long-term storage and needs to be identified and assessed for accessioning into the Museum collection.
The intern will be working closely with our Technical Officer (Dr Kailah Thorn) and Curator of Herpetology (Dr Paul Doughty) in the Research and Collections facility at Welshpool. They will have the opportunity to learn how the facility is organised, how to identify and database our specimens, and how and why we preserve the state collections.
The Western Australian Museum is the State’s premier cultural organisation, housing WA’s scientific and cultural collection. For over 120 years the Museum has been making the State's natural and social heritage accessible and engaging through research, exhibitions and public programs.
